Frequently Asked Questions

Why does affluent Williamson County need United Way?
Statistics show not every Williamson Countain is blessed with prosperity. There are still many rural areas in this county where people don't have easy access to help for their needs. Requests for services multiply along with the growth in this community. Any one of us can face disease, natural disasters or crises at any time.

Who decides where the contributions go?
Community volunteers, knowledgeable of local needs, study and monitor the agencies and programs to make sure all monies are invested where they will do the most good.

Does United Way of America set the policy for local United Ways?
There are approximately 1,400 United Ways across the country. Each has its own mission and regulations. Therefore, each United Way is separate from one another and has its own Board of Directors that makes decisions about what is best for their community.

If I work outside of Williamson County, but I participate in a workplace campaign, how can I be sure my money will go to fund my local community?
If you work outside of Williamson County, it is necessary to write Williamson County on your United Way pledge card in the designation space provided, or ask your United Way representative to show you how to designate your gift to Williamson County. Does United Way fund Planned Parenthood?
The United Way of Williamson County does not fund any programs of Planned Parenthood.

Does United Way fund the Boys Scouts?
United Way exists for one reason – to help us come together as one community to identify and work on the issues we agree are most important. The volunteers who lead United Way of Williamson County are continuing support for Boy Scout programs this year, placing the needs of local youth in our community above any other considerations. These volunteers, from all walks of life, grapple with extremely difficult decisions about where best to invest your contributions each year. Thousands of local boys – including hard-to-reach, low-income, at-risk youth – greatly benefit from Scouting’s proven record of safe, structured after-school programs that foster self-esteem, build discipline and teach personal responsibility.

Who do I call if I need help?
Throughout Middle Tennessee you can dial 2-1-1 (or 269-help), for assistance from trained professionals who will refer you to agencies who can help. You can also go to the Partner Agency page of our web site to locate information for a particular agency. Please feel free to call any of these agencies for assistance if you are in need.

How can I get my business involved in a United Way campaign?
We welcome new workplace campaigns and would love to come and speak with you about how to become involved and participate in the annual fall campaign. Please call the development staff at 771-2312.

What is required when conducting a United Way campaign?
Generally companies offer their associates the opportunity to give through payroll deduction. We can tailor campaigns to meet the needs of individual companies. Some other suggestions for successful campaigns are:

  • Presentations at prescheduled company meetings (10-15 minutes)
  • Agency speakers can be scheduled to participate in company meetings (20-25 minutes)
  • Other opportunities available that create greater awareness of the health and human services available in our community
  • Agency tours
  • Days of Caring (a hands-on volunteer opportunity scheduled for Sept)

My employees live in several different counties. Why United Way of Williamson County?
United Way of Williamson County tells everyone, during presentations, they can give to the community of their choice and can simply indicate their wishes in writing on their pledge card. You can ensure your gift will be used to help your local community.
